Balancing the Scales: Women Leading the Human Skills Shift - IWD 2026
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate six remarkable women from our Human on the Inside series who are redefining what leadership looks like. Across industries, sectors and career stages, their stories share a common thread: real power comes from within. From emotional intelligence to courageous communication, these women show us that human skills are not just career enhancers, they are catalysts for agency, influence and lasting change.
“Human skills are transferable — they have enabled me to traverse a number of different roles, across many industries, in multiple countries.”
Kate Freeman, Founder, Equity Hive | Human on the Inside
From Service to Sovereignty: A Leadership Shift Women Need
One of the most powerful things we’ve heard from the women in Maxme’s ‘Human on the Inside’ series is a consistent truth: getting ahead isn’t just about working harder. It’s about knowing yourself deeply, then showing up accordingly.
Amy Gildea, a company director whose career has spanned Medecins Sans Frontieres, KPMG, and global development sectors, speaks candidly about her growth journey:
“Like many women, I was conditioned to smooth edges, to make others comfortable — even at the expense of my own truth. Over the years, I’ve had to be intentional about building assertiveness and boundaries. This shift — from service-based leadership to sovereign-based leadership — has been one of my most important growth journeys, and one I believe is especially critical for women.”

This is what human skills development unlocks: the ability to lead from a place of clarity and conviction rather than obligation. When we know our strengths, manage our emotions with intelligence, and communicate with impact, we don’t just survive in workplaces — we shape them.
Representation Requires More Than Access
“Getting women to the table is one thing. Making sure their voices carry once they’re there is another.”
As Melinda Davis, General Manager of Empowered Women in Trades, reminds us, gender equity is not a women’s issue — it’s a workforce one. And Natalie MacDonald, founder of Working @ It and former senior editorial leader at LinkedIn, has seen this play out at a global scale:
“The companies, leaders and professionals that invest in human skills won’t just communicate better; they’ll build stronger cultures and earn deeper trust.”
Natalie MacDonald, Founder, Working @ It | Human on the Inside
Storytelling. Authentic communication. Knowing how to translate insight into influence. These are human skills that (arguably) have never mattered more in a world where trust is the new currency.
Values as a Navigation System
The path to balance isn’t linear. It’s messy, nonlinear, and often hard-won. And those who navigate it best? They’re anchored in self-knowledge.
“Know your values, strengths and interests — what energises you and what drains you gives you a lot of great insight into how to sustain yourself through change.”
Sally McNamara, Development Partner, RMIT FORWARD | Human on the Inside
Self-awareness isn’t a “softer” version of skill development — it’s the foundation of it. When you know what makes you tick, you make better decisions, build more genuine relationships, lead with greater impact, and bounce back faster from setbacks.
Balancing the Scales Starts Within
Sonia McDonald, global leadership expert and one of Australia’s Top 100 Entrepreneurs, says it best:
“Authentic leadership comes from profound courage and a deep love for empowering others. Together, we uncover our inner greatness and do it boldly, with hearts wide open.”
Sonia McDonald, Founder, LeadershipHQ | Human on the Inside
Boldness is what shifts power. It doesn’t come from waiting for permission, it comes from building the inner architecture of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and human connection.
Structural change must continue. Pay equity, flexible leadership, parental leave reform, representation targets — all of it matters. But human skills a powerful accelerant. They are how women take up space with confidence, advocate for their worth, drive cultures worth working in, and mentor the next generation to do the same.
The Human Skills Advantage Is Real
The numbers don’t lie. Emotional intelligence accounts for 58% of job performance (Bradberry, T 2014, Forbes). 9 out of 10 top performers have high emotional intelligence. And McKinsey research tells us that 43 of the 56 foundational skills needed for the future of work are human skills — that’s three quarters (McKinsey & Company, 2021).
Two thirds of all jobs will be human skill-intensive by 2030 (Deloitte Access Economics, commissioned by DeakinCo., 2017). And with AI accelerating across every industry, the distinctly human skills — empathy, creativity, ethical reasoning, the ability to connect — are becoming more valuable, not less.
