Resilience is important for success and wellbeing

Resilience is important for success and wellbeing particularly when navigating big changes in your life or working in groups or with other people.

Stress often brings out the worst in people’s behaviour, and that may include your own behaviour. It’s OK if this happens. The key to navigating to a positive outcome in these situations is to develop your resilience capabilities so you are equipped and able to adapt when facing challenging or high-stress moments like a deadline to meet where stress levels are high.

This section will provide you with a number of tools that will help improve your resilience. So, what is resilience? In short, it’s your ability to adapt when facing challenges or difficult situations. Resilience is an important skill when transitioning between key life phases (such as moving from secondary to tertiary education) and working in groups or with other people because it gives you the mechanisms to protect against experiences that may be overwhelming, stressful or difficult.

An example of a challenging or stressful situation would be working with other students on a group assignment at university and one or more people haven’t met their commitments, putting the whole group’s success at risk. A person with low resilience may become angry or lash out at the whole group or individual members. A person with high resilience would be able to respond calmly whilst identifying a reasonable solution to the situation.

Highly resilient people can recover from setbacks, adapt to change and to keep going when things get tough. People with low resilience are easily overwhelmed and may resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as task avoidance, self-destructive behaviour or abusing addictive substances.

Here are some examples of personal resilience:

– Focussing on key priorities during challenges such as significant personal or professional changes, difficult meetings or competition from rivals.
– Creating a new approach to meet deadlines when some or all of a project hasn’t gone according to plan

Resilience is important because it gives you the strength needed to process and overcome hardship. Resilient people tap into their strengths and support systems to overcome challenges & work through problems.

Characteristics of resilient people include:

@ High self-awareness
@ Strong communication skills
@ A sense of control over their lives
@ Identifying as a survivor not a victim
@ Good problem-solving skills
@ Social connections to people outside of university or work who can offer support
@ Knowing when to ask for help

Focusing on developing good resilience will help you better deal with anger, improve self-care, sharpen communication skills and enhance ability to problem solve.

Ultimately, being more resilient will help you maximise what life has to offer….
